Commentary on the Koran: “Surah 64 Mutual Loss and Gain”

Pickthall Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

The Surah At-Taghabun takes its name from the Day of Judgment in verse 9 which is deemed to be a day of mutual disillusion or of loss to the sinners and gain to the believers who obey God.

It is considered as being from the First year of the Hijrah but is a late Beccan Surah as verses 14ff. are taken as being indicative of the pressure brought to bear by wives and families to prevent Muslims from leaving Becca in the Hijrah of 622 CE.

64.2. He it is Who created you, but one of you is a disbeliever and one of you is a believer, and Allah is Seer of what ye do.

The Creator sees all and judges all.

See Commentary on the Koran: Surah 63 (No. Q063) for  1Samuel 16:7 at ayat 4 and John 6:44 at ayat 6 and also Hebrews 4:13 in  Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No.Q017) at ayat 1.

Romans 9:15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

64.3. He created the heavens and the earth with truth, and He shaped you and made good your shapes, and unto Him is the journeying.

Psalm 119:73 Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.

Deuteronomy 32:4 The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.

Refer to Hebrews 9:27 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 18; Ecclesiastes 12:7 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019) at ayat 40 and Jeremiah 32:17 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 8.

Psalm 44:21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

Psalm 139:1-3 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! 2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.

64.5. Hath not the story reached you of those who disbelieved of old and so did taste the ill-effects of their conduct, and theirs will be a painful doom.

64.6. That was because their messengers (from Allah) kept coming unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they said: Shall mere mortals guide us? So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah was independent (of them). Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

See Revelation 7:12 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 63 (No. Q063) at ayat 8 above.

Also see 2Chronicles 36:16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 10 (No. Q010) at ayat 39; Job 42:2 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 59; Nehemiah 9:30 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 22 (No. Q022) at ayat 49  and Nehemiah 9:26 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 35 (No. Q035) at ayat 26.

The folk of Noah, the inhabitants of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the hosts of Egypt, the dwellers of Canaan, the people of A’ad, the tribe of Thamud and many others ruined their lives because they did not heed the warnings of the messengers sent to them by Allah to turn from their evil ways to the correct worship of the One True God. Their stories are all recorded in the pages of the Bible and the Koran as examples to later generations. However, humanity will not learn and will pay with their lives for their  despicable and scandalous behavior. They have all been consigned to the Second Resurrection for retraining and reeducation to lead them to repentance and the correct worship of the Almighty God. Those who persist in their rebellion against the Most High will be cremated in the lake of fire.

64.7. Those who disbelieve assert that they will not be raised again. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Yea, verily, by my Lord! ye will be raised again and then ye will be informed of what ye did; and that is easy for Allah.

Ezekiel 37:4-6 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.”

Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

64.8. So believe in Allah and His messenger and the light which We have revealed. And Allah is Informed of what ye do.

See John 6:44 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 63 at ayat 6 above.

Also refer to Hebrews 4:13 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No.Q017) at ayat 1, and  Job 28:24 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 29 (No.Q029) at ayat 8.

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

64.9. The day when He shall gather you unto the Day of Assembling, that will be a day of mutual disillusion. And whoso believeth in Allah and doeth right, He will remit from him his evil deeds and will bring him unto Gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to abide for ever. That is the supreme triumph.

64.10. But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, such are owners of the Fire; they will abide therein - a hapless journey's end!

64.13. Allah! There is no God save Him. In Allah, therefore, let believers put their trust.

64.14. O ye who believe! Lo! among your wives and your children there are enemies for you, therefor beware of them. And if ye efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

64.15. Your wealth and your children are only a temptation, whereas Allah! with Him is an immense reward.

Matthew 10:35-37 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

1Timothy 6:7-10 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

64.16. So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful.

64.17. If ye lend unto Allah a goodly loan, He will double it for you and will forgive you, for Allah is Responsive, Clement,

1Timothy 6:17-19 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
