Commentary on the Koran: Surah 84
“The Splitting Asunder”
Pickthall Translation with Bible Quotes from the English Standard
Version unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
Al-Inshiqaq takes its name from the heaven being split asunder in
verse 1. This is the arrival of the
Messiah and the heavenly council responsible for monitoring the Saints referred
to as the guardian angels of Surah 82. They are the council of the Throne of
God responsible for the monitoring of the prayers of the saints. They are
Twenty-four and the Twenty-fifth is the Messiah as the High Priest we see in
Revelation chapters 4 and 5. These are
the heads of the twenty-four divisions of the priesthood to be established at
Jerusalem.
The earth has cast
out all in the judgment in the First and then the Second Resurrection at the
end of the Millennium referred to in Revelation chapter 20.
Again it is an
Early Beccan Surah emphasising the Judgment and the Advent of Messiah for that
purpose.
*****
84.1. When the heaven is split asunder
84.2. And attentive to her Lord in fear,
84.3. And when the earth is spread out
84.4. And hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty
84.5. And attentive to her Lord in fear!
See Joel 2:10 and
Matthew 24:29 in Commentary
on the Koran: Surah 81 (No. Q081) at ayat 2; Isaiah 24:18-19; Luke
21:25-27; Revelation 6:14 and Revelation 16:18-20 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 81 (No. Q081) at ayat 6.

20:12 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15; John 5:28-29 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021) at ayat 47; Daniel 12:2 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 24 (No. Q024) at ayat 42 and 2Peter 3:10 in Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 55 (No. Q055) at ayat 39.
Isaiah 34:4 All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.
Ezekiel 37:12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel.
1Corinthians 15:28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
84.6. Thou, verily, O man, art working
toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).
See 1Corinthians 15:28 at ayat 5 above.
Genesis 3:17-19 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Ecclesiastes 2:20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun,
Ecclesiastes 5:18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot.
Ecclesiastes 8:15 And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
Romans 8:19-23 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Refer to Ecclesiastes
12:7 in Commentary
on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019) at ayat 40 and Daniel 12:2 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 24 (No. Q024) at ayat 42.
The plan of God is moving along and physical man will be raised to a
spiritual creation firstly at the advent of Christ and secondly after the
completion of the General or Second Resurrection. Fallen humanity and the
fallen angelic Host would have been redeemed and reconciled back to God Most
High.
84.7. Then whoso is given his account in
his right hand
84.8. He truly will receive an easy
reckoning
84.9. And will return unto his folk in
joy.
Again we see the giving of account in the right and left hand indicating
righteousness and correction. In this case the term behind his back indicates
final failure at the end before the Second Death and the Lake of Fire.
Refer to Revelation 20:4-6 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018) at ayat 31; Matthew 25:34 in Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 30 (No. Q030) at
ayat 15 and Daniel
7:27 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 44 (No. Q044) at ayat 57.
84.10. But whoso is given his account
behind his back,
84.11. He surely will invoke destruction
84.12. And be thrown to scorching fire.
84.13. He verily lived joyous with his
folk,
84.14. He verily deemed that he would
never return (unto Allah).
84.15. Nay, but lo! his Lord is ever
looking on him!
Refer
to Revelation 20:11-15 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15; Psalm 33:13-15 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 60 and Matthew 25:41 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 16.
2Thessalonians 1:9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
Isaiah 66:24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
84.16. Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset,
84.17. And by the night and all that it enshroudeth,
84.18. And by the moon when she is at the
full,
84.19. That ye shall journey on from
plane to plane.
We are certain that the glow of the sunset will be
followed by the darkness of nightfall. The night is also synonymous with the
hiding of secrets and mysteries. The sun and the moon act as signs of God. All
these move along in their circuit according to their set timing. This clock in
the sky is an amazing phenomenon. So God can swear by these certainties that
man will go from birth to infancy to childhood to being an adult to old age
which are different stages in a normal person’s life. Will he learn anything
from the different toils in his life or will he drift through life and still be
empty at the end of it? What will he
have earned from the toils of his life? It is through the truth revealed by God
Almighty and by the guidance of His Holy Spirit that we are led to right
understanding and works that help the elect saints to attain eternal life in
the first garden of paradise. That is the result that counts.
Refer to Romans 2:6-8 in Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 45 (No. Q045) at ayat 15.
Ecclesiastes 7:29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
2Kings 22:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
84.20. What aileth them, then, that they
believe not
84.21. And, when the Qur'an is recited
unto them, worship not (Allah)?
84.22. Nay, but those who disbelieve will
deny;
84.23. And Allah knoweth best what they are
hiding.
84.24. So give them tidings of a painful
doom,
Refer to Jeremiah 17:10 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 1; Daniel 12:2 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 24 (No. Q024) at ayat 42; Ephesians 4:18 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 39 (No. Q039) at ayat 22; 2Corinthians 4:4 in Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 43 (No. Q043) at ayat 39 and Ecclesiastes 11:9 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 46 (No. Q046) at
ayat 20.
John 12:39-40 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”
Psalm 44:21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.
The rejection of
the faith by the idolatrous Beccans was a constant theme.
The elect were
encouraged in all this rejection and persecution from 611 CE to 613 CE and the
First Hijrah to the church in Abyssinia.
84.25. Save those who believe and do good
works, for theirs is a reward unfailing.
See 1Peter 1:4-5 in Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 68 (No. Q068) at ayat 34 and Romans 2:7 in Commentary on the Koran:
