Commentary on the Koran: Surah 39
“The Troops”
Pickthall Translation; Bible quotes from the English
Standard Version used unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
Az-Zumar “The Troops”
has its name derived from a peculiar word meaning troops or companies occurring
in verses 71 and 73. Pickthall holds
that it belongs manifestly to the Middle Group of Beccan Surahs although
Noldeke places it in his last group and some authorities hold that verses 53
and 54 were revealed at Al-Madinah.
The
text from verses 71 to 73 refers to the sequence of the Resurrections again
where the elect are sent in companies or troops to the Garden of Paradise of
the First Resurrection and the others are sent in troops to wait in the grave
of Sheol or the pit to await the Second Resurrection. This basic and recurrent theme of the Koran
is reinforced Surah after Surah so that there can be no doubt in the Arabs and
those associated with them that the dead face judgment according to the Laws of
God and the Faith and Testimony of the Scriptures under Messiah and the elect.
Anyone claiming to be of the Faith and who says that when they die they go to
heaven is a Baal worshipping infidel.
The
text deals with the supremacy of the One True God in the creation and the fate
of those within it.

39.1. The revelation
of the Scripture is from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.
39.2. Lo! We have revealed the
Scripture unto thee (Muhammad) with truth; so worship Allah, making religion
pure for Him (only).
39.3. Surely pure
religion is for Allah only. And those who choose protecting friends beside Him
(say): We worship them only that they may bring us near unto Allah. Lo! Allah
will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Lo! Allah guideth
not him who is a liar, an ingrate.

that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans
and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Romans 2:13 For it is
not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the
law who will be justified.
Titus 2:11-12 For the
grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12training
us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled,
upright, and godly lives in the present age,

require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love

after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the

Psalm 37:23 The steps
of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way;
During
the Second Resurrection all raised to physical life will be given reeducation
and training to lead them to repentance and all differences will be cleared up.
39.4. If Allah had
willed to choose a son, He could have chosen what He would of that which He
hath created. Be He Glorified! He is Allah, the One, the Absolute.
And indeed
Allah did create the sons God in the Host and they do serve Him as will all
mankind be sons of God.

1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38: 4-7 and Psalm 33:9 at ayat 18.6 Commentary on the

God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by
your will they existed and were created.”
God
Almighty generated His many angelic sons by divine fiat and they serve and
worship Him as will we all.
39.5. He hath created the heavens
and the earth with truth. He maketh night to succeed day, and He maketh day to
succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each
running on for an appointed term. Is not He the Mighty, the Forgiver?

six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and

39.6. He created you from one being, then from that (being) He made
its mate; and He hath provided for you of cattle eight kinds. He created you in
the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in a threefold gloom. Such
is Allah, your Lord. His is the Sovereignty. There is no God save Him. How then
are ye turned away?
Genesis 1:27 So God
created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and
female he created them.
Genesis 2:20-23
The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to
every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for
him. 21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and
while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22And
the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and
brought her to the man. 23Then the man said, "This at last is
bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she
was taken out of Man."
Psalm 139:13 For you
formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

11:5 As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of
a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

39.7. If ye are thankless, yet Allah is Independent of you, though He
is not pleased with thanklessness for His bondmen; and if ye are thankful He is
pleased therewith for you. No laden soul will bear another's load. Then unto
your Lord is your return; and He will tell you what ye used to do. Lo! He
knoweth what is in the breasts (of men).

ayat 17.1; Revelation 20:12 at ayat 17.15 and Hebrews 9:27 at ayat 17.18 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).
39.8. And when some
hurt toucheth man, he crieth unto his Lord, turning unto Him (repentant). Then,
when He granteth him a boon from Him he forgetteth that for which he cried unto
Him before, and setteth up rivals to Allah that he may beguile (men) from his
way. Say (O Muhammad, unto such an one): Take pleasure in thy disbelief a
while. Lo! thou art of the owners of the Fire.
Psalm 53:3 They have
all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does
good, not even one.
Psalm 106:13 But they
soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.
Judges 2:17 Yet they
did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down
to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked,
who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD, and they did not do so.
John 12:25 Whoever
loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it
for eternal life.
Refer to
1John 2:16-17 at ayat 18.8 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).
Man
only turns to God when adversity comes his way. When good times return he
forgets God who blessed him and goes back to the traditions of his ancestors
who worshipped the worthless idols of the nations around them. First the
evildoers face death in this life and then in the Second Resurrection when they
are raised to physical life they will face the toughest training camp that entails
intensive corrective training to bring them to repentance. If they do not
repent during the 100 years allocated for that purpose they face the second
death and their bodies will be burnt in the lake of fire.
39.9. Is he who payeth adoration
in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter
and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a
disbeliever)? Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Are those who know equal with those
who know not? But only men of understanding will pay heed.
See
2Corinthians 6:14-16 at ayat 38.28
in Surah 38 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 38 (No. Q038).
Without
the Holy Spirit man cannot understand and is unable to be brought to Salvation.
39.10. Say: O My
bondmen who believe! Observe your duty to your Lord. For those who do good in
this world there is good, and Allah's earth is spacious. Verily the steadfast will
be paid their wages without stint.
Ecclesiastes
12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his
commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
Deuteronomy
10:12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear
the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your
God with all your heart and with all your soul,
Micah 6:8 He has
told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do
justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Romans 6:23 For the
wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Galatians 6:8 For the
one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one
who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
39.11. Say (O Muhammad): Lo! I am
commanded to worship Allah, making religion pure for Him (only).
39.12. And I am commanded to be the
first of those who are muslims (surrender unto Him).
39.13. Say: Lo! if I
should disobey my Lord, I fear the doom of a tremendous Day.
39.14. Say: Allah I
worship, making my religion pure for Him (only).
39.15. Then worship what ye will
beside Him. Say: The losers will be those who lose themselves and their
housefolk on the Day of Resurrection. Ah, that will be the manifest loss!
39.16. They have an
awning of fire above them and beneath them a dais (of fire). With this doth
Allah appal His bondmen. O My bondmen, therefor fear Me!
Refer to
Luke 4:8 at ayat 20.14 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) and also 2Thessalonians 1:8-9 at ayat 38.27
in Surah 38 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 38 (No. Q038).
God
the Almighty has the words of eternal life and those who serve so-called gods
are just wasting their time and effort on worthless idols. These idol
worshippers will be consigned to the Second Resurrection and given intensive
corrective training to lead them to repentance and if they refuse to repent
they will face the Second Death.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear
of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and
instruction.
39.17. And those who
put away false gods lest they should worship them and turn to Allah in
repentance, for them there are glad tidings. Therefor give good tidings (O
Muhammad) to My bondmen
39.18. Who hear advice
and follow the best thereof. Such are those whom Allah guideth, and such are
men of understanding.
39.19. Is he on whom
the word of doom is fulfilled (to be helped), and canst thou (O Muhammad)
rescue him who is in the Fire?
39.20. But those who keep their
duty to their Lord, for them are lofty halls with lofty halls above them, built
(for them), beneath which rivers flow. (It is) a promise of Allah. Allah
faileth not His promise.
Acts 2:38 And Peter
said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.

believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be
condemned.

who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant
and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a
thousand generations,
Psalm 37:38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed; the future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Refer to
John 16:13 at ayat 17.84 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) and also to Revelation 20:6 at ayat
18.31 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).
39.21. Hast thou not seen how Allah hath sent down water from the sky
and hath caused it to penetrate the earth as watersprings, and afterward
thereby produceth crops of divers hues; and afterward they wither and thou
seest them turn yellow; then He maketh them chaff. Lo! herein verily is a
reminder for men of understanding.
Psalm 104:13-14 From your
lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of
your work. 14You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and
plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth,
Job 38:27 to
satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground sprout with grass?
Isaiah 40:7-8 The grass
withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the
people are grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word
of our God will stand forever.
James 1:11 For the
sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and
its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his
pursuits.
The
life cycle in nature as shown by the above verses also reflects the physical
life cycle in a person’s life. Only the wise and those with understanding ponder
over these things. Most are just educated fools who waste their time on unprofitable
passions.
39.22. Is he whose
bosom Allah hath expanded for Al-Islam, so that he followeth a light from his
Lord, (as he who disbelieveth)? Then woe unto those whose hearts are hardened
against remembrance of Allah. Such are in plain error.

unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of

darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the
ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Proverbs 24:20 for the
evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
39.23. Allah hath
(now) revealed the fairest of statements, a Scripture consistent, (wherein
promises of reward are) paired (with threats of punishment), whereat doth creep
the flesh of those who fear their Lord, so that their flesh and their hearts
soften to Allah's reminder. Such is Allah's guidance, wherewith He guideth whom
He will. And him whom Allah sendeth astray, for him there is no guide.

Psalm 28:4 Give to them according to their work and according to the evil of their deeds; give to them according to the work of their hands; render them their due reward.
39.25. Those before
them denied, and so the doom came on them whence they knew not.
39.26. Thus Allah made
them taste humiliation in the life of the world, and verily the doom of the
Hereafter will be greater if they did but know.
39.27. And verily We
have coined for mankind in this Qur'an all kinds of similitudes, that haply
they may reflect;
Refer to
2Timothy 3:16 at ayat 20.6 and 1Corinthians 10:11 at ayat 20.99 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).
The
people during the time of Noah, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Pharaoh
and the host of Egypt, the people during the time of Moses and the Judges, and
many other tribes and communities did not heed the warnings of their messengers
and died in the calamities that came upon them. Their wealth, their power and
their gods could not deliver them. The later generations should have learnt
from the destruction faced by earlier communities for their evil deeds but they
did not. They followed in the traditions of their ancestors and ruined their
physical lives. They have been consigned to the Second Resurrection where they
will face the toughest training camps designed to lead them to repentance. The
communities extant today will die if they do not repent of their scandalous and
despicable behavior.
39.28. A Lecture in Arabic,
containing no crookedness that haply they may ward off (evil).
1Corinthians
6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside
the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
1Corinthians 6:9
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of
God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
Colossians 3:5 Put to
death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion,
evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Romans 1:18 or the
wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Revelation 22:14-15
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right
to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15Outside
are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and
idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
Refer to Revelation 21:8 at
ayat 17.10 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).
39.29. Allah coineth a
similitude: A man in relation to whom are several part-owners, quarrelling, and
a man belonging wholly to one man. Are the two equal in similitude? Praise be
to Allah! But most of them know not.
Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
A
man who is answerable to many masters is not equal to one who serves one
master. Scripture reminds us that we cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve
two women either. Go study the lives of biblical characters who married
multiple women and you will find that they inherited untold troubles. The women
in Solomon’s life even endangered his spiritual life. So the person who prays
to a multitude of gods cannot be equal to the person who worships the One True
God.
39.30. Lo! thou wilt
die, and lo! they will die;
39.31. Then lo! on the
Day of Resurrection, before your Lord ye will dispute.

30:17-18 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away

Colossians 2:8 See to it
that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to
human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not
according to Christ.
Disbelievers are consigned to the Second Resurrection to face judgment and
correction. There they serve One True God under One Rule.
39.33. And whoso
bringeth the truth and believeth therein - Such are the dutiful.
39.34. They shall have
what they will of their Lord's bounty. That is the reward of the good:
39.35. That Allah will
remit from them the worst of what they did, and will pay them for reward the
best they used to do.
39.36. Will not Allah
defend His slave? Yet they would frighten thee with those beside Him. He whom
Allah sendeth astray, for him there is no guide.

for him there can be no misleader. Is not Allah Mighty, Able to Requite (the
wrong)?

hurt; or if He willed some mercy for me, could they restrain His mercy? Say:

39.41. Lo! We have revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture for

So
all men are given once to die and then their spirit returns to He who gave it. Those
of the elect who fall asleep await the First Resurrection. All others await the
Second Resurrection when God resurrects them and gives them life again and
brings them to understanding and grants them repentance. That is the
distinction in this text explaining the gospels.
39.43. Or choose they

39.47. And though those who do
