Commentary on the Koran: Surah 46
“The Wind-curved Sandhills”
Pickthall Translation. Bible
quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
Here we see the last of
the Ha Mim series as the Warning to the Arabs and the World generally.
Al Akhaf is what is technically a Barquand. It is readily seen in the sandy deserts of
the world. It is understood to have especially characterised the area of the
A’ad at Al Hijr in Arabia (see S15 Al Hijr above). The text derives its name from verse
21. The warning is specific and follows
the texts that were directed at the Arabs from the A’ad to the Amalekites generally and their successors.
It is from the Middle
Group of Beccan Surahs but
verses 10, 15-18 and 35 were added at Al-Medinah and Pickthall states that in
his commentary.
Summary of the Ha Mim
texts to date:
Surah 40 is a warning
to the idolaters at Becca and among the Arabs and is
a call to the study of the Scriptures and to repentance and obedience so that
their people may be granted their place in the First Resurrection and are
warned of the dangers of the Second Death in the Second Resurrection.
Surah 41 Fusilat deals
with the exposition of the Scriptures in Arabic to people who are assumed to
have prior knowledge of the Scriptures. It thus establishes that knowledge of
the Scriptures is essential to an understanding of the Koran and of the Faith.
The Surah takes up the warnings from Surah 11 “Hud,” Surah 13 “The Thunder” and Surah
15 “Al Hijr.” These
texts portray the sequence of the destruction of the Arabs and Amalekites over
the ages into the Last Days for their idolatry and the rejection of the
Scriptures and the Command of God.
Surah 42 “The
Consultation” or Counsel is directed at the Qureysh and the Arabs generally
based from Becca.
It is a specific warning to the Arabs
generally for their idolatry and rejection of the Laws of God. The entire Ha Mim are directed to this
purpose of the conversion of the Arabs and their salvation which to date has
not been effected.
Surah 43 “The Gold
Adornments” also termed “The Ornaments of Gold” derived from a word in verse 35
is the Fourth of the Ha Mim. The text refers to the Scriptures and the fact
that the Koran is a summary in Arabic to make plain the meaning of the
Scriptures. It is not a substitute for them.
The Hadithic Imams pretend that the Scriptures were lost and that the
terms refer only to the Koran which is false. The text attacks the false
teachings of the idolatrous Arabs and their failure to follow the Scriptures
and is in fact prophecy. The Prophet
reinforces the role of Moses, and that the Messiah the Christ gives the Laws
and the Commandments of God (v. 63). He also reiterates in verse 81 that the
Benificent One had no son (meaning by procreation), in that Messiah was born by
divine fiat, as we see in previous Surahs, as were
the other sons of God (Job 1:6; 2:1 and 38:4-7).
Surah 44 “The Smoke” refers
to the conditions of the Last Days but the Hadithic scholars attempt to limit it
to the conditions before the conquest of Becca
following the drought there before the armies of the Prophet and the Church
conquered Becca and took in the thousands of
unconverted and later unbaptised infidels as Muslims.
It is a prophecy of the
Last Days for those under the pseudo Muslims (and pseudo Christians) and
applies the penalty of the people of Egypt under Pharaoh when they rejected
Moses (vv. 17ff). Then the text refers
to the Children of Israel in their deliverance (v. 30) and their selection as
the chosen of God (v. 32). The Arabs are then referred to as the People of
Tubb’a as successors to the Amalekites and the fate of the idolatrous Arabs
(see also Surah 15 Al Hijr
at Q015 above).
Surah 45 Al Jathiyah
“The Kneeling” also termed “the Crouching” is named from verse 28 where the
nations are all brought before God in judgment and thus more appropriately
termed “the Kneeling.” This is the Sixth of the Seven Ha Mim and is
specifically a warning to the Arabs both in Becca and
Arabia then and in the Last Days for the Judgment in the two Resurrections of
the Dead.
The text shows clearly
that the Children of Israel were given the Scriptures, the Command and the
Prophethood; and with Christ it was vested in the Churches of God as the
Children of Israel and the nations would be judged according to the commands
given to them (vv. 16-17).
The Ha Mim are clear
prophecy of the Faith and the 7th, “The Barquands”
or the “Wind Blown Sandhills” is a final reinforcement of the warning to the
Arabs of the Scriptures and the Commands of God and the fate of them and the
nations in the Last Days. It is direct rebuke of the Binitarians/Ditheists
and Trinitarians of their placement of any of the Host with Allah or Eloah and
their fate in the Judgment (vv. 4-6).
The Prophet denies he
is any new thing among the prophets of God and that he is another mere warner
as were the prophets before him (v. 9).
The Koran states that it
is a confirming Scripture of the Scriptures before it from Moses onwards (v.
12) and cannot therefore be read independent of the Scriptures, and cannot
therefore contradict them.
It also says that those
who refuse to believe the Scriptures say that this is an ancient lie (vv. 11,
30), which is exactly what these false teachers did to the Koran with the
Hadith and they will be judged and punished in the Second Resurrection.
The text places the
Fifth Commandment as the basis of the acceptance of the elect and also even as
we saw with Samuel at such a young age (vv. 15-16).
We see that the Arabs
and the nations will all be punished for not following the Laws of God and for
praying to others aside from the One True God (vv. 19-28). The Arabs from the
A’ad on down are identified, and also it is from the A’ad that we derive the
name of the Wind-curved Sandhills and warning of the
early Prophet to the A’ad whom they disregarded.
All who died and were
not converted and baptised of the Saints will be in the Second Resurrection as
will those who pray to other than the One True God Eloah or Allah. Thus, those
who pray to Christ, let alone the dead, such as Mariam
and the saints, will also be punished.
The text summarises the
requirements for acceptance in the First Resurrection following on from the
warnings of the previous Ha Mim.
There is only One Lord;
One Faith; and One Baptism and those who
teach against the Faith and the Scriptures will die and go to the Second
Resurrection.

Mim.

See Nehemiah 9:31 at ayat 41.2 in Surah 41 above.
46.2. The
revelation of the Scripture is from Allah the Mighty, the Wise.

Christ! Amen.

and just are your judgments!”
46.3. We created not the heavens and
the earth and all that is between them save with truth, and for a term
appointed. But those who disbelieve turn away from that whereof they are
warned.
Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very
good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Psalm 104:24 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In

their dwelling place,

the day of trouble.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter
under heaven.
2Timothy 4:3-4 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound
teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers
to suit their own passions, 4and will turn away from listening to
the truth and wander off into myths.
46.4. Say (unto them, O Muhammad):
Have ye thought on all that ye invoke beside Allah? Show me what they have
created of the earth. Or have they any portion in the heavens? Bring me a
scripture before this (Scripture), or some vestige of knowledge (in support of what
ye say), if ye are truthful.
46.5.
And who is further astray than those who, instead of Allah, pray unto such as
hear not their prayer until the Day of Resurrection, and are unconscious of
their prayer,
46.6.
And when mankind are gathered (to the Judgment) will become enemies for them,
and will become deniers of having been worshipped.
See Nehemiah 9:6 at ayat 44.9 in Surah 44 and Acts
4:12 at ayat 45.20 in Surah 45 above.
Psalm 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human
hands. 5They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. 6They
have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. 7They have
hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in
their throat. 8Those who make them become like them; so do all who
trust in them.
Psalm 96:5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the
LORD made the heavens.

heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”
James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons
believe—and shudder!
46.7. And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, those who
disbelieve say of the Truth when it reacheth them: This is mere magic.
46.8. Or
say they: He hath invented it? Say (O Muhammad): If I have invented it, still
ye have no power to support me against Allah. He is Best Aware of what ye say
among yourselves concerning it. He sufficeth for a witness between me and you.
And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
46.9.
Say: I am no new thing among the messengers (of Allah), nor know I what will be
done with me or with you. I do but follow that which is inspired in me, and I
am but a plain warner.
See 2Chronicles
36:16 at ayat 10.39 in Commentary on the

darkness, and the light dwells with him.
Refer to 2
Peter 1:20-21 at ayat 20.6 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).
46.10. Bethink you: If it is from Allah and ye disbelieve therein, and
a witness of the Children of Israel hath already testified to the like thereof
and hath believed, and ye are too proud (what plight is yours)? Lo! Allah
guideth not wrong-doing folk.
Refer to
2Timothy 3:16 and Deuteronomy 29:29 at ayat 20.6 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).
Isaiah 8:20 To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak
according to this word, it is because they have no dawn
Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for
the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for
your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
46.11. And those who disbelieve say
of those who believe: If it had been (any) good, they would not have been
before us in attaining it. And since they will not be guided by it, they say:
This is an ancient lie;
Job 28:28 And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the
Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those
who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
46.12. When before it there was the Scripture of Moses, an example and
a mercy; and this is a confirming Scripture in the Arabic language, that it may
warn those who do wrong and bring good tidings for the righteous.
Isaiah 42:21 The LORD was pleased, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify his
law and make it glorious.
Romans
10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who
believes.

Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020); and Matthew
5:17 at ayat 30.30 Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 30 (No. Q030).
The Quran is the
confirmation of the OT and the NT. Those who do not study the earlier Scriptures
and are not guided by the Holy Spirit cannot understand the Koran.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep
his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

for what they used to do.
Job 17:9 Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows
stronger and stronger.

ready to be revealed in the last time.
Refer to Revelation
20:6 at ayat 11.108 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 11 (Q011).
46.15. And We have commended unto man kindness toward parents. His
mother beareth him with reluctance, and bringeth him forth with reluctance, and
the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months, till, when he
attaineth full strength and reacheth forty years, he saith: My Lord! Arouse me
that I may give thanks for the favour wherewith Thou hast favoured me and my
parents, and that I may do right acceptable unto Thee. And be gracious unto me
in the matter of my seed. Lo! I have turned unto Thee repentant, and lo! I am
of those who surrender (unto Thee).
Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in
the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Deuteronomy 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God
commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in
the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Samuel was handed to the High Priest after he had been weaned by his mother so
he could have been 3 to 4 years old at that time. 2Macabees 7:27 states “I
carried you nine months in my womb, and nursed you for three years, and have
reared you and brought you up to this point in your life, and have taken care
of you”
Once you were twenty and above you were considered as eligible for the army,
during the time of Moses.
Nineveh was given 40 days to repent and they did. Judah had 40 years to repent
and they did not. Having reached forty years of age it is high time for man to
repent of his past and return to his maker. He should give thanks to God for
all his favors and all his blessings. He has passed the mid point in his life and
he is now on the downhill slope of his life. Life is a passing breeze that may
not return. Time to ponder and reflect on the consequences of his deeds and to
live in compliance with the laws and ordinances of God.
46.16. Those are they from whom We accept the best of what they do, and
overlook their evil deeds. (They are) among the owners of the Garden. This is
the true promise which they were promised (in the world).
1John 3:22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his
commandments and do what pleases him.
Hebrews 13:21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working
in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be
glory forever and ever. Amen.
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Revelation 5:10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and
they shall reign on the earth.”
46.17. And whoso saith unto his parents: Fie upon you both! Do ye
threaten me that I shall be brought forth (again) when generations before me
have passed away? And they twain cry unto Allah for help (and say): Woe unto
thee! Believe! Lo! the promise of Allah is true. But he saith: This is naught save
fables of the men of old:
46.18.
Such are those on whom the Word concerning nations of the jinn and mankind
which have passed away before them hath effect. Lo! they are the losers.
See Ezekiel 37:4-6 at ayat 45.26 in Surah 45 above.
Exodus 21:17 Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.
Leviticus 20:9 For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be
put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him.
Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that
comes judgment,

corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap
eternal life.

Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019); and John 5:28-29 at ayat 20.55 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).
46.19. And
for all there will be ranks from what they do, that He may pay them for their
deeds; and they will not be wronged.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Proverbs 11:19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who
pursues evil will die.
Revelation 22:12 Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to
repay each one for what he has done.
46.20. And on the day when those who disbelieve are exposed to the Fire
(it will be said): Ye squandered your good things in the life of the world and
sought comfort therein. Now this day ye are rewarded with the doom of ignominy
because ye were disdainful in the land without a right, and because ye used to
transgress.
Ecclesiastes 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth,
and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of
your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God
will bring you into judgment.
2Timothy 4:4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander
off into myths.
See Ecclesiastes 12:13 at ayat 46.12, Galatians
6:8 at ayat 46.18 and Matthew

in Surah 45 above.
Also refer
to 1John 2:16-17 at ayat 18.8 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).
46.21. And make mention (O Muhammad) of the brother of A'ad when he
warned his folk among the wind-curved sandhills - and verily warners came and
went before and after him - saying: Serve none but Allah. Lo! I fear for you
the doom of a tremendous Day.
46.22.
They said: Hast come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring upon us that
wherewith thou threatenest us, if thou art of the truthful.
46.23. He said: The knowledge is with Allah only. I convey unto you that
wherewith I have been sent, but I see you are a folk that know not.
46.24. Then, when they beheld it as a dense cloud coming toward their
valleys, they said: Here is a cloud bringing us rain. Nay, but it is that which
ye did seek to hasten, a wind wherein is painful torment,
46.25.
Destroying all things by commandment of its Lord. And morning found them so
that naught could be seen save their dwellings. Thus do We reward the guilty
folk.
46.26. And verily We had empowered them with that wherewith We have not
empowered you, and had assigned them ears and eyes and hearts; but their ears
and eyes and hearts availed them naught since they denied the revelations of
Allah; and what they used to mock befell them.
46.27. And
verily We have destroyed townships round about you, and displayed (for them)
Our revelation, that haply they might return.
46.28.
Then why did those whom they had chosen for gods as a way of approach (unto
Allah) not help them? Nay, but they did fail them utterly. And (all) that was
their lie, and what they used to invent.
Messengers are sent to warn their people to turn from their evil ways and
worship only the One True God. But people do not repent and end up reaping the
consequences of their wrong deeds.
See 2Chronicles
36:16 at ayat 10.39 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 10 (No. Q010).
Revelation 16:11 and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores.
They did not repent of their deeds.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
Mankind is on the high road to his own destruction. They have refused to repent
in the past and God has told us that they will not repent in the near future.
Refer to:
Habakkuk 2:3 at ayat 18.82 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018); and 2Peter
3:9 at ayat 19.80 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019).
The fulfillment of
God’s prophesies will surely come. Meantime it may seem that the messengers are
wrong. The messengers deliver their warnings as instructed but they do not know
the hour or the day when the prophesied calamity will take place. God allows
man time to repent of his deeds but man thinks that the calamity will never
come. God’s promises are true and His purpose will stand.
Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed
speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.
Deuteronomy 11:16 Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and
serve other gods and worship them
1Samuel 12:21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or
deliver, for they are empty.
Jeremiah 2:11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But
my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.
46.29. And when We inclined toward
thee (Muhammad) certain of the jinn, who wished to hear the Qur'an and, when
they were in its presence, said: Give ear! and, when it was finished, turned
back to their people, warning.
The “jinn” here refers to the clever gentiles such as the Jews and other
gentile nations permitting the preaching of the gospel and Koran in their nations
during the time of the apostles and the church. There was a tradition among the apostles that
also some of the demons repented and that was why the church was allowed entry
to some cities. Becca
may have been so entrenched with demons that they did not repent until the
church was placed there and never really repented in the majority. Then they used
the Hadith to destroy the faith there or drive it
undergound which happened after the deaths of Ali and Hussein.
46.30. They said: O our people! Lo! we have heard a scripture which
hath been revealed after Moses, confirming that which was before it, guiding
unto the truth and a right road.
The Qur’an is confirmation of Scripture that went before it. It is a summary
and commentary on the OT and the NT.
Refer to
2Timothy 3:16 and Deuteronomy 29:29 at ayat 20.6 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).
46.31. O our people! respond to Allah's summoner and believe in Him. He
will forgive you some of your sins and guard you from a painful doom.
46.32. And
whoso respondeth not to Allah's summoner he can nowise escape in the earth, and
he hath no protecting friends instead of Him. Such are in error manifest.
Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me

the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold.
Psalm 33:20 Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
46.33. Have they not seen that

creation, is Able to give life to the dead? Aye, He verily is Able to do all
things.

not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
1Samuel 2:6 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and
raises up.
Romans 4:17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many
nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the
dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth
by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not
with God. For all things are possible with God.”
See Ezekiel 37:4-6 at ayat 45.26 in Surah 45 above.
46.34. And on the day when those who
disbelieve are exposed to the Fire (they will be asked): Is not this real? They
will say: Yea, by our Lord. He will say: Then taste the doom for that ye
disbelieved.
46.35. Then have patience (O
Muhammad) even as the stout of heart among the messengers (of old) had
patience, and seek not to hasten on (the doom) for them. On the day when they
see that which they are promised (it will seem to them) as though they had
tarried but an hour of daylight. A clear message. Shall any be destroyed save
evil-living folk?
