Commentary on the Koran: Surah 93 “The Forenoon” or “The Morning Hours”

Pickthall Translation: Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Ad-Duba takes its name from the opening text.

This Surah follows the texts leading to the persecution and the First Hijrah of 613 CE and shows that God has not forsaken them. The latter portion will be better than the former and they will be content.

There are 11 verses so that the matter is not complete and is only at its intermediary point which is half that of the complete figure of 22.

Once again we were beggars and orphans and God protects us and enriches us and so He requires us to do the same to those who are orphans and in need. Therefore the bounty of the Lord is the discourse of the elect.

*****

93.1. By the morning hours

93.2. And by the night when it is stillest,

93.3. Thy Lord hath not forsaken thee nor doth He hate thee,

93.4. And verily the latter portion will be better for thee than the former,

93.5. And verily thy Lord will give unto thee so that thou wilt be content.

We should rejoice in what we are given and be content.

2Corinthians 4:17-18 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

For what the elect will attain in the resurrection will be far better than our present life as it is noted in the following verses.

1Corinthians 2:9-10 “But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”

93.6. Did He not find thee an orphan and protect (thee)?

93.7. Did He not find thee wandering and direct (thee)?

93.8. Did He not find thee destitute and enrich (thee)?

Refer to:

Psalm 27:9-10 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in.

John 14:16-19 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

Jeremiah 10:23 I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

Psalm 112:2 His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

93.9. Therefor the orphan oppress not,

93.10. Therefor the beggar drive not away,

93.11. Therefor of the bounty of thy Lord be thy discourse.

Refer to:

James 1:27 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 30 and Isaiah 58:7 and Isaiah 58:10 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 59 (No. Q059) at ayat 10.

Zechariah 7:10 do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.

Jeremiah 7:6-7 if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

1Chronicles 16:8-9 Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 9Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!

Isaiah 63:7 I will recount the steadfast love of the LORD, the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

Psalm 105:5-6 Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 6O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

So give thanks in all things for the bounty of the Living God endures forever.
