Commentary on the Koran: Surah 95 “The Fig”

Pickthall Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

An-Tin “The Fig” takes its name from the first of the two items in verse 1. It is a Very Early Beccan Surah in the primary revelation to the Beccans and Arabs generally and is a revelation that deals with man and his duties to God under the Laws of God and the surety of His Judgment with the Mysteries of God and the Plan of Salvation. The result was that they dismissed the warning and invented Sharia Law in direct contempt of the directives of the One True God.

95.1. By the fig and the olive,

1Kings 4:25 And Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon.

Micah 4:4 but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

Exodus 27:20 You shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light, that a lamp may regularly be set up to burn.

Exodus 35:28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense.

Exodus 30:23-25 Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, 250, and 250 of aromatic cane, 24and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25And you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.

95.2. By Mount Sinai,

Nehemiah 9:13-14 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

95.3. And by this land made safe;

So the land was made safe by the Laws of God handed to Moses at Sinai and by which all men are judged. Yet they dismissed it and invented the abomination of Sharia when it was not appointed to even be considered and they will be punished very soon.

See Micah 4:4 at ayat 1 above.

Psalm 48:8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God, which God will establish forever. Selah

Isaiah 2:3 and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of  the LORD from Jerusalem.

God is associated with all of the above. All good things including revelation come from God. Peace will prevail when all abide by the rule of law. When focus is on God and His revelation things go well for man but when man is self-seeking and rejects the truth he degenerates to the level of animals. Surah 62 states:

“The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the ass carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.”

95.4. Surely We created man of the best stature

95.5. Then we reduced him to the lowest of the low,

Refer to Romans 1:21-25 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 16 (No. Q016) at ayat 3.

Ecclesiastes 7:29 But I did find this: God created people to be virtuous, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path. (NLT)

Romans 3:11-12 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Ephesians 4:18-19 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

95.6. Save those who believe and do good works, and theirs is a reward unfailing.

Refer to:

2Timothy 4:8 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 37 (No. Q037) at ayat 49 and Romans 2:7 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 45 (No. Q045) at ayat 15.

2Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Romans 8:17-18 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

95.7. So who henceforth will give the lie to thee about the judgment?

Refer to:

Hebrews 9:27 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 18; John 5:28-29 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021) at ayat 47 and Ecclesiastes 12:14 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 33 (No. Q033 at ayat 2.

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

95.8. Is not Allah the most conclusive of all judges?

Psalm 96:13 before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalm 98:9 before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

The Law of God as delivered through Moses and the prophets is the measure of Judgment and the end result of all will be to obey or to die permanently in the Second Death.
